Molte band non possono essere etichettate con un unico genere, mentre altre preferiscono dar vita ad un genere da portare avanti lungo l'intero corso di una carriera. I Dream Theater rientrano in questa seconda categoria. Essi propongono "Progressive Metal", ovvero un mix tra Prog-Rock e Fusion. John Petrucci (chitarra), John Myung (basso) e Mike Portnoy (batteria) suonavano insieme già negli anni '80 quando frequentavano il Berklee College Of Music. La svolta però avviene nel 1992 quando, durante le audizioni per il loro secondo album "Images And Words" incontrano James LaBrie (scelto tra i 200 candidati). "Images And Words" scala la Top10 americana e l'album "Awake" entra nella Top20 tedesca sorprendendo tutti. 5 anni dopo i Dream Theater ripetono il successo con "Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory", l'album considerato la vera opera magna della band. L'album parla di fratricidio, ipnosi e reincarnazione, prende ispirazione dal film "Dead again" e il brano più famoso è senza dubbio "The Spirit Carries On". Alla base del settimo album "Train Of Thoughts" stanno invece alcuni album riscoperti dai Dream durante il loro ultimo tour: "Master Of Puppets" (Metallica) e "The Number Of The Beast" (Iron Maiden).
